A good photo is hard to define, like "Good" in any art medium is relative to the person observing it. What makes a good painting, a good song? To establish what a good photograph is it is up to the creator of the photograph and the viewer to decide. Some may claim that composition is the key, others may claim clarity, but these are just aspects of a very complex and ever-changing medium. If you pick up a book called "seizing the light: A history of photography" you will notice that there is no consistent approach to photography. It, like any other medium is a tool for personal expression. Some people tend to get caught up in the idea that photographs are reality. They show you a photograph and say, "This is my son" or "This is me in front of the grand canyon" etc. This is not true. Is a painting of a person that person? Nope. So, the idea here is to look at many possibilities of how photographs are made and decide for yourself what you like? And always ask yourself, Do I like the subject matter or the photograph itself? This will help distinguish between the art object and its association with reality. And, If you like or dislike an image, think about why that is.

Firstly, the usage of the word, "CAMWHORE" is a human insult and an offence to intermediate photographers like me.

Secondly, if you ask me what makes a good photo, I'll tell you, EVERY PHOTO IS A GOOD photo. Even the blurred ones would make a good background for your powerpoint presentations.

Being in photographic society for 3 years, the one-third rule is still as important, but really, it honestly isn't all about that. It's about the meanings behind every good photo.

The sorrows, happiness, serendipity, rowdiness behind every photo. From fashion photography to macro photography. From photojournalist to nature photography.

Every each photo out there, someone loves it.

A good photo is any photo that captures a moment in a way that envokes emotion in the viewers. Whether you want them to laugh, cry, be shocked or say "aaaaahhhh" ... as long as your photo produces genuine reactions, it's a good photo.

Rule of thirds, lighting, composition - all that stuff is nice, but not particularly necessary.

I totally agree with EssLoves8ch.
One that evokes in you the feelings you were experiencing at that moment in time when the photo was taken, and made you feel like you are reliving that moment in your life all over again.
A good photo is one that truly captures your memories.

A photo should be used for capturing life. So if someone looks at it and won't feel like they're there, or wish they were there, then it's probably not too great. But people have different personalities, so go wild. Really.

This is a very interesting question! I think this really depends on who you are, who you are presenting to, and what kind of a mood your in. Also, sometimes what you think is a good photo others may think it is just a picture of nothing. So it all really just depends!
