OKAY, if you're a female, and 28, and decent looking, you already have the upper hand compared to others. Im 20, Junior in college, I have taken a bartenders course recently. If you want to get a job anywhere being a bartender, you need to have a good amount of experience or have taken this class (crash course usaully 2-3 weeks about 3-5 a day depending on how many times during the week you meet). TAKE THIS CLASS. You will learn EVERYTHING you need to know about bartending itself, the do's and don'ts, all liquors, beer, wines, everything. Employers also look for this, if you present this to an employer, and you have the communication skills and charisma they are looking for..you're in no problem. This is like a college on bartending and key to getting a job and not making a fool of yourself once you get behind the bar. Considering your situation, tough out the class for a couple of weeks and finding something will be a lot easier and boost your confidence 1,000% Also, if you are hired at a decent place, you can make a solid income doing so(even as a 28 yr old).

Here's a thing. I was thrown into my bartending job, but I was lucky, I was taught certain things by my predecessor. There are certain things that you need to get the hang of because of the type of customers that come into your place of business. You seem like you have a sense of humor, which goes a loooooong way in bartending. Look decent, act decent & the tips are great! If you're not sure how to make a drink, ask them. People who drink the stuff know what goes into them. If they want it right, they'll tell you exactly how to do it. Don't be afraid, let the customer tell you how to make their drink. Tell them that you're new & they'll understand.
Most drinks have fancy names, but that's it. Not nearly as hard to make as one would think.
By the way, tell the jerk who said "get a real job" to "stuff" it!
(what is a "real" job anyway?)
Mix it, stir it, shake it! Go for it!
p.s. - Tajura001 - hit it on the spot with knowing your customers and when they've had enough.

There are bartender schools in almost every big city in the USA. Don't live in a big city? Might be the time to go see what it's like!
Your chances of bartending in a place where the money is good and the tips are great will be much better after you get your education. Good Luck!

You need to start from the ground up by being a porter. Gradually get to know the bartenders there at the restaurant or bar or dance club, let them know what you want to be, and you will gradually become a bartender if you stick it out.
Avoid going to bartender school. Most bars don't want someone with textbook learning. They want to teach a specific way that the bar wants.

you are joking, right? ok, if youre not, do not waste your money on a "mixology course" first thing to do, get a job as a server or cocktail waitress, you will learn as you go if you remember to ask questions. ie, whats in that? not to the customer but to the bartender.you have to be very people friendly, have lots of patience, take a tips class, not very many states require a license ,and know how to read people. im NOT joking! ive been a bartender for 26 years, it does take skill.you have to ask yourself, do i want to work in an environment (depending on where you work) where the cussing flies and you really have to know when they have had enough and then take the crap from them when they dont agree with you. go ask your favorite bartender what they have to go thru, then make your decision. extra good luck to you.

Well, First and foremost... You definitely have to have a memory for bar-tending.
Not just due to the fact you have to remember ingredients, but it also requires a memory to remember who gets what drink... Now this part is simplistic.... you know the woman "always" gets the change. :*)
Actually, I would enjoy sitting at your bar... Good Sense of humor!
Check to see if there are any bar-tending schools in your area. Some establishments will do on the job training, but there few and far between anymore. In my area anyway.

My advice to you is to always remember
To SMILE!!
That you do not concentrate on one customer.
Don't stand in one spot, but don't sit down either.
Always offer a drink before your customer has to ask.
Always be polite, even flirty.
Listen even when your not interested.
Always make them feel special, they will usually come back just to see you.
The drinks will come to you. They sound hard, but you will have the hang of it in no time.
Don't let anyone scare you, this is gonna be a great job, and I bet you will be great at it!!
Good Luck,
Did I mention to SMILE :)
