Los Angeles is one, no matter how you go.

But there are about five different ways you can do it. I live in Long Beach and have gone into the Fillmore area on weekend camping trips.

If you take the 710 to the 5 to the 126, you go through several small communities such as Bell, Vernon, and probably Commerce; then up the 5 passing Burbank, Glendale, the San Fernando Valley, and into Santa Clarita before turning west into Fillmore.

Or you could cut off on the 118 Simi Valley Freeway toward Moorpark, then up the 23 to Fillmore.

If you don't want to go up the 5 Golden State Freeway, you could take the 101 through Hollywood, Sherman Oaks, Reseda, Encino, Thousand Oaks (all in the San Fernando Valley), then up the 23.

To avoid downtown L.A. altogether, take the 405 past the South Bay communities -- Torrance, Lawndale, Inglewood, El Segundo -- and the beach cities -- Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach -- then Santa Monica, and on north, connecting either to the 5 or the 101.

The "scenic route" would include the 405 past LAX to the 10 Santa Monica Freeway, then west to the ocean, and up the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) through Malibu and Pacific Palisades, toward Oxnard, but taking Hwy. 23 north before you get that far.

This last is the leisurely way I usually go outbound, and on the return trip home, I take the 101 Freeway, connecting to the 405 or 5, depending on traffic.
