The Jewish leaders crucified Him because He was a threat to their system and their power. The Romans went along with it for the exact same reasons. They charged Him with blasphemy and disturbing the peace. If you read the rest of John 18 and the chapter before, you will note that Jesus knew they were coming, went out to meet them, and stopped His disciples from defending Him. It was His mission to die for the world and be resurrected.

Jesus was crucified because the Jewish leaders felt threatened by them. He was really crucified because that's why He came to earth. Either we have to die in and for our sins, or we can accept what Jesus did for us on the cross. Jesus was claiming to be God when he said, "I Am". The Jews knew very well that "I Am" is one of God's name, used when Moses was standing in front of the burning bush (Exodus 3:14). When Jesus said, "I Am" he was saying, "I am the eternal God who talked with Moses at the burning bush." and the people knew enough to be frightened and in awe.

Jesus, the Jew, infuriated the Jewish hierarchy of his time by calling them "Hypocrites", by protesting customs (The Money changers)
and by presenting himself as a Messiah. The Jews were blamed for his crucifixion, by turning him to the Romans also as a rebel against the empire orderly rule. His story was taken by Paul, who was the first christian, who spread this new religion around the old world.
Now I ask you:
What if TODAY the Pope & his Cardinals run into someone who calls himself a Messiah,
Calls the christian hirarchy "Hypocrites" ,
and disrupts the order, like donations believers give to the church? Don't you think he would be persecuted by the church? Look at what Luther & the reformation did. And don't attempt to count the victims of the church since the time of "saint" Paul to this day.

Jesus told the truth. The religious leaders considered it blasphemy, for Jesus to call Himself God. The men who came to get him were overwhelmed by the power of God upon Jesus and they fell back, unable to stand under the anointing power upon Him. Even with all the miracles He had done the religious leaders would rather keep their secure little circle of religious rules rather than give up power to Him

The words "I Am" refers to the Name (Ha-Shem) that God replied with, when Moses (Moshe) asked Him His Name. The Jews knew very well what the Messiah was saying, and it ticked them off pretty good.

It all boils down to the age old question the Jesus asked...
"Who do YOU say that I AM?"

Yes, because the phrase "I AM" was used by God to identify Himself many times, so any Israelite calling himself "I AM" was in, effect, saying they were God.
Exo 3:6 And He said, I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look upon God.
Exo 3:14 And God said to Moses, I AM THAT I AM. And He said, So you shall say to the sons of Israel, I AM has sent me to you.

Yes, the alleged crime against him--for which he was not found guilty by Pontius Pilate but for which he was crucified anyway, due to Pilate's relenting to those learned Jewish men opposed to Christ, who were supported by mob hysteria--was indeed blasphemy.

Jesus was crucified for all of us. He took our place to pay for our sins. It does not matter what trumped up charges He was convicted on.

Because He was saying that He was the Son of God. This is what the scribes and Pharisees were calling blasphemy.
