A friend and I are doing research on the WWII military history of Formosa, which is today called Taiwan. As we know, Taiwan had been ceded to Japan in 1895, and so in the 1940's it was part of the Japanese Empire.

The US Congress issued a Declaration of War against Japan on Dec. 8, 1941. According to what an associate of ours read in a Japanese book, US bombing raids against targets in Formosa began on Oct. 12, 1944. However we don't have any independent verification of that date.

As to when US aerial/naval attacks against Formosa ended, of course everything was over by early Aug. 1945, but we don't have the exact date when the last attack on Formosa was carried out.

Does anyone know where we can get online access to full records of the US military activity against Formosa and the Pescadores during this WWII period? This is needed in conjunction to a research report we are writing.

Military occupation does not transfer sovereignty, and hence is not equivalent to annexation. Despite the intentions expressed in the Cairo Declaration, Potsdam Proclamation, and Japanese surrender documents, under the law of war the United States military troops would have been fully justified in accepting the surrender of...
