Call your vet in the morning and get some flea preventive, if they have advantage get it. If not frontline and revolution are good ones too. The advantage will kill the fleas on her within the first 12 hours and then continue to kill them for four weeks. They all will do this, but the advantage the fleas do not have to bite her to die like the others. DO NOT buy the over the counter flea control products, they can harm your kitty. Those products are absorbed into her blood stream unlike the vet products which are absorbed into the oils in her coat. Do not give her a bath for 48 hours after applying the flea preventive, the area of application will appear oily do not try to wipe it off. I hope this helps you out.

Please do NOT use over-the-counter flea medications like Hartz. My friend gave Hartz flea drops to her cat, and it almost killed him. If a cat has a bad reaction to the stuff, it happens within a few hours. They get siezures and drool uncontrollably until they die. It is horrible. If my friend had gone to bed early that day, she would have lost her cat.
Please do not use these products on your cat. If grooming and bathing do not take care of the flea problem, it is time to cough up the extra money and get a prescription treatment like Advantage.

By the way, it is very important to take care of fleas because not only do they make your pet miserable (how would YOU like being eaten by bugs all day long?), they carry tapeworm eggs and will almost always infect your pet, which can be very dangerous or even fatal.

Do the right thing. You would never give your child an inexpensive medication that kills a small percentage of children every year. Do not do the same thing for your pet.

Having the same problem, but they don't seem to have infested my home. I'm trying to take precautions, however.

I tried Frontline Plus....didn't work. I checked epinions.com and discovered that a lot of people had the same problem with it (and with the company refusing to cough up the dough for their "money back guarantee"). If I buy anything again, it will be Advantage.

My husband and I just bought some natural spray that you can put on animals AND carpets and upholstery. It's called Natural Chemistry DE FLEA Pet and Area Spray. We soaked the cat and dog with it....but after spraying it on a live flea, it doesn't appear to "kill them on contact" like it states. Does ANYTHING work these days?!

The flea comb has been the most effective thing for me so far. Keep a cup of hot water next to you to dip the comb in between stokes. Any fleas that are on it will drown in the water.

Tomorrow, I'm going to submerge my cat up to his ears in the bathtub and hold him there for a while. I've put a few pieces of a flea collar in my vacuum to kill any that I may suck up. And I'm going to buy some eucalyptus plants to keep around my home from now on (fleas hate the smell).

Here's a site with some good suggestions:

Good luck! I feel your pain:(

(I see people recommending OTC products and flea shampoos. I don't recommend them because they can be toxic to your cat and are often inaffective. A regular shampoo works just as well since the whole idea is to drown the fleas. A shampoo I like is Cloud Nine Herbal Shampoo. It has eucalyptus, cedar, and tea tree oil in it, all of which fleas hate. And don't use garlic, it's toxic to cats.)

I've found a couple more websites:

while most of the advise above is great.. here's a tip that might help. Before dipping the cat, wet the cat's face with the solution (be careful of the eyes) with a small washcloth. the fleas tend to move up the body to the ear/nose area for protection when the rest of the cat's body is being dipped so make sure you really get behind the ears wet.

1) Flea shampoo.

2) Liquid flea treatment that you put between the shoulderblades (if you're looking for something immediately, hit up Wal-Mart).

3) Flea spray for the cat's bedding and other places.

4) Fogger - leave the house and let the can do the rest.

That's really the best way I can think of to thoroughly treat it all.
Good luck!

Dawn soap will kill fleas and is safe. Also spray house and bedding and get cat some Advantage. Do not use a product called Zodiac on your pets, this product is poison and cats are dying from it. Also no flea collars, they can burn the cats skin.

To the person who said use garlic, are you aware that gorlic is deadly to cats? It causes kidney failure!

my cat's vet gave us advantage..he said flea baths and over the counter products don't help..they only kill the fleas that are on them at the time..they don't kill the eggs or prevent them from coming back...give them the advantage 3 times during the winter season and it should help during the spring..it stays in their bloodstream and prevents them from getting more fleas..
