I am pretty sure I have an infection that has spread to my jaw and right tonsil. I made a dentist's appointment, but they can't get me in until November 10th. Is there anything I can do to ease the pain, or keep the infection from getting worse until then? Or should I just see my regular doctor and get some antibiotics?

Did you tell the dentist that you have an infection in there and you need some antibiotics? If you already did that, see your regular dr., or go to the ER. Otherwise about the only thing would be tylenol....

I would start calling dentists in your dental plan until you found one who took you now. There is no excuse for that BS; that is a sign of a doctor who just does not care about you, just your money. I had a situation like that a short time ago, a tooth cracked and I was in extreme pain and my dentist told me the soonest they had a appointment opening for a emergency appointment was the next day 8 am or 2 pm, obviously I had no choice but to go to them at that point {at 8am of fing course}, but now they can not understand why I have not come in for the follow up appointment. It is because I have switched dentists. There is no excuse for that kind of BS, get away from that doctor as fast as you can, network with fellow employees if you can, that is how I found my current doctor and she seems pretty good so far.

As for the possible infection, that is a dangerous thing, get in to see your regular doctor ASAP, they will at least give you some Vicodin for the pain if nothing else and if it is an infection they will give you antibiotics to keep it under control till you can get into see a dentist to take care of it and you definitely need that.

One note, Vicodin knocks me out, if you need to be awake to work, or just get around, take four Excedrin Extra Strength, it will not kill the pain, but it will dull it enough for you to function.

Hope that helps,

John B.

Call your DENTIST he should be able to phone in an order for antibotics.

In the mean time you can rinse with equal amounts of hydrogen peroxide and water.
Or
Listerine
Or
Salt Water Rinse

All of the above work to combat the infection. Peroxide and water works wonders but tastes like crap. They all work by breaking the bacterial wall. I used a combination of which every I could stand at the time.

For Pain: 2 Tylenol and one Advil. (Painkiller Cocktail)

Unfortuantly like all medical care, dentists are in high demand and therefore there is a waiting list for services. Most dentist charge outrageousally more money to be seen on an emergency basis, and therefore if money is a factor. I would wait till your appointment.

Depends, majority of people do not have enough room for their wisdom teeth to fully erupt even if they are in perfect alignment to erupt. Usually they will cause crowding of teeth if allowed to erupt. Most wisdom teeth if allowed to erupt do not erupt all the way and end up with tissue over the back half of them which can cause infections and gum disease of other teeth. Wisdom teeth are not useful unless you are missing other teeth and need them. Majority of people cannot keep these teeth clean enough to prevent them from needing fillings due to cavities or spreading gum disease and bone loss to other teeth. If they were allowed to grow in and needed to be removed later in life it can then cause nerve damage b/c the bone will be more set later.

You'll probably have to see an oral surgeon. My dentist referred me to an Oral to get mine removed, but mine weren't as bad as yours. Make sure you gargle and take lots of pain meds until you get in..also give them another call and tell them it's an emergency!!

u should tell ur dental office that its an emergency..it usually takes 1-2days to get u in...but if they cant and u think it is an infection u should see ur dr...once u take the antibiotics they will start working 24-48hrs and the pain will subside.

If you're in non-stop pain, then obviously get it checked out ASAP. So yea, for now just go to your regular doctor (because it might be more then you think it is).

YOU DIDN'T SAY HOW OLD YO ARE. FOR THE PAIN I RECOMMEND SOME OTC NSAID LIKE IBUPROFEN. YOU MIGHT WANT TO SEE YOUR PHYSICIAN AND GET A PRESCRIPTION FOR AN ANTIBIOTIC UNTIL YOU SEE YOUR DENTIST.
