I have a four month old miniature poodle and I'm trying to housetrain him. We take him out at all the recommended times, and as far as not going in the house he's doing pretty well. But it takes him forever to go when we're outside! He sniffs everything, wanders around, gets distracted when he hears something, and is usually more interested in play than potty. Even in the morning when he's been crated all night, he'll pee relatively quickly, but it takes about ten minutes for him to decide to poop. We've tried not taking him as often, thinking maybe he'd need to go more when we did take him, and we've tried coming back inside and crating him when he doesn't go, then trying again in a bit. Is there anything we can do to speed up the process once we get outside?

Great advice, all. Now I need to know if what I'm doing is ok. It's very rainy here today and he peed and pooped this morning, but wouldn't go when I took him out again. I was patient, we walked around and he got soaked. Nothing. I dried him off and crated him, and tried again. Again he got soaked, still nothing. So I put him in the exercise pen with a puppy pad, his rug, food, and some toys. Within half an hour he'd peed and pooped, neither one on the puppy pad. I got some of the pee on the puppy pad, removed the poop, and showed him both while saying "potty." I put the pad back in, and he's still in there. I didn't want to let him out like I was rewarding him for going in the house. I feel bad for confining him, but he will stand in the rain for fifteen minutes and still not go potty.

Im sorry but theres not really anything you can do for that. He is a puppy and everything is going to distract him. He will get better the older he gets. Right now the only thing on his mind is playing and investigating everything, kinda like toddlers with pottytraining. When they start playing they forget they have to go to the bathroom. If anything I would call your vet and see if they might have any suggestions for you. The only one I can think of is to give him treats when he pottys outside for you and maybe he will start going potty right away just to get his treats. They dont even have to be treats they could be just a few peices of his dog food, but make a big deal of him going potty.

He's a puppy and he's distracted?? Shock of all shocks! Lol, sorry for the sarcasm....but just think of a puppy the same way you would a small child; have you ever tried potty training a toddler? Oy VAY! Hehe.

Are you walking him around when you go out? This often speeds up the process for my 7 month old lab/boxer. If he's tired, he goes straight out and does his business without fuss, but when he's got energy, he usually likes to sniff around the yard for a while before getting anything done. And it's the same situation; pees right away, but pooping is another matter. So try walking your puppy around a bit.

A puppy that's been crated all night will be thrilled to be up for the day and out in the fresh air. Just make sure he gets plenty of exercise every day and he should begin to grow out of his distracted stage. Also, look at things from his perspective; he likes being outside....when he poops right away, you put him right back inside, ruining his good time. So if he delays pooping, he delays going in and extends his time in the great outdoors. You may want to try breaking this cycle by taking him in when he doesn't go poop within a reasonable time period. If you let him stay out there until he goes, it will reinforce for him that the longer he dawdles, the longer he gets to stay out. As soon as he goes poop, praise him! Give treats for proper bathroom behavior...and try switching things up for him by letting him play for a few minutes AFTER going poop. This way he starts to associate pooping with play time instead of pooping with END of play time.

Good luck!

Little puppies are so cute when they do that... They just take their time... they want to.. then they do not...then they do and etc. I love watching them as they might start to poo and then they see a bird and want to look at it.. then they sniff around and start again, etc,... At any rate.. It is a very normal thing

Sometimes dogs just like to take their time. I have a bichon and he is 2 years old and still to this day he takes forever and has to pick the perfect spot. Dogs are weird like that!
