Metro is very safe except for a few stops out in the Prince George's County suburbs. I take it all the time and have no security worries. As for convenient, on Sundays they run a restricted schedule with trains coming about once every 12 minutes. This isn't bad but if you have to transfer train lines you might be waiting. There's also been a great deal of weekend trackwork going on lately that slows the schedule down even more, sometimes 20-30 minutes between trains. So check the schedules before you leave. Metro's web site is a lot more up-to-date than the station maps or the phone service. If you won't have a computer with you, there are lots of internet cafe's where you can pay for a half-hour of computer use and get your timetables all ready.

In July of this year, I visited Washington D.C. for the first time. Returning from the Smithsonian heading for Colombia Maryland at about 5 or 6 p.m. on a weekday, my companion and I fell asleep on the subway and did not awake for some minutes once the train reached the "end of the line" at a full stop, and this only to discover we were the only ones on the line and completely safe.
The trains run regularly, conveniently, and are simple to use and pay for. (Although I could have sworn that the recording, "Please stay away from the doors..." became more agitated each time it needed to be replayed).
As a resident of Toronto, Canada, I'd have to rate the D.C. subways as very safe during weekday rush hour flow. I had about $2,000 USF (cash) in my bag, and all was as it was before I drifted off....

We spent twelve days in D.C. in '04, and used the metro almost exclusively. We used it every day of the week and as late as 10 pm and had no problems. We found it to be reasonably priced, on time and very convenient.

I think you will find it very safe and very convenient. It's not hard to figure out where you want to go, but sometimes it's hard to find the metro stations when you are unfamiliar with the area. Just ask someone in the area, and they will point you in the right direction. The metro is extremely convenient, and very reasonably priced.

Silver Spring technically isn't in DC, even nevertheless that's probable the main suitable community that's perfect next to the Metro. that's in easy terms 20 minutes to downtown DC. It has a mall, substantial food market, finished ingredients, and picture theatre. i do no longer be responsive to the top costs yet i'm beneficial that's not that low priced.

Try a $6.50 0ne Day Pass, you can ride Metrorail as much as you want in a day. It's good after 9:30 a.m. on weekdays and all day on weekends and federal holidays. Buy online or at any Metro station from a passes/farecards machine.
