Donate it to Locks of Love. (I think that's the name of it).

Definitely not to Locks of Love because it has a bad business reputation. Besides, if you gave your hair to LOL you'd be donating it, not selling it. In a nutshell:

"LoL says they get 2000 donations a week. That is 104,000 per year.

They say they need up to 10 donations per wig. So they should be able to make at least 10,400 wigs a year.

They say only that they've made "over 1000." That would only need, at the most, 10,000 donations. (Ten times the actual number of wigs.)

Where is the rest of the hair going?

Over 90% of the hair they get is not going towards wigs, and it can't all be in unacceptable condition.

(Even if that much is in unacceptable condition, they should be offering stricter guidlines about what is acceptable, and encouraging people not to send poor hair, saving them the expense of that much sorting. Not asking for more.)" (1)

Go the LOL's actual website. There it says that... "it takes about six to ten ponytails to make a wig. They get 2000 donations a week. They make 1000 wigs a year. Do the math. They should be able to make 200 wigs A WEEK! You might also mention that the real hair wigs are not for cancer, and that there is a charge." (2)

This says that in the 2002 financial year, "LoL provided 113 vacuum-fitted cranial prosthesis, repaired 22 pieces, and provided 39 synthetic hairpieces."

However, they also made $150,719 from "hair sales" in the 2002 financial year. They do say on the website that they sell gray or short hair, but it seems like an awful lot of money to make if they're not selling most of the hair that they receive (especially when compared to the number of wigs they produced in the same period!)
You can also point out to her, that according to Lol own webpage, most children are sold wigs, not given them. To apply for a wig, the applicant has to provide evidence of their income & tax status for the "sliding scale" of charges." (3)

This is a rather haphazard compilation of information, but I think that it is enough to demonstrate the poor business practices and misinformation produced by this 'charity'. In reality, hair for extensions and some wigs are acquired in very poor countries from women and girls who are paid a mere pittance for a few years' work. You may find a wigmaker who will buy your hair, but take note that they use discretion and will not accept damaged and/or colored hair.
