I have had my 14 wk old 3lb maltese for a week now. My maine coon is about 12 lbs & 8 months old. We got him at the Humane Society so Im sure he isnt a full breed maine coon & he is neutered. Anyways, we have tried & tried for hours to get them used to eachother. The puppy isnt scared of him & just wants to play of course. The cat pounces on him & attacks him. I let them do there thing until my puppy yelps then I pull him off the puppy. Sometimes it takes a while to even pull him off he is so ruff. Lastnight he turned around & attacked me. I know its kinda like interfearing but the puppy doesnt stand a chance. I feel really bad becuase I have to keep them seperated when Im not home or sleeping, & the cat used to sleep under the bed. Now I have to close my doors. I have a billion toys for him & even play with him as soon as i get home b4 I even go check on the pup. What else can I do? I cant keep living like this.. I feel so bad for the both of them :( Will he ever just like him?

Cats need longer than a week to adjust to new arrivals. I had 2 cats 8 months old and got 2 kitten 4 months old my house was chaos for just over a month. You'll have to keep separating them for a while but they still may become good friends or at least tolerant of each other.

They will eventually get along, but you have to wait it out. It took my cats several months to get used to our new puppy. If they fight, just let them. My puppy always went after my cat and she fought back at first, but eventually she got used the puppy and just ignored her. Now I have two cats and my dog is two years old. My newest cat she treats as a cat and the one I already had she treats as if she is just another dog. They might sniff one another every once in a while but they no longer fight. Don't interfere unless it means life or death. They are both babies still and they will learn. I am sure you panic when you see them fight, but that is just something animals do until they get used to each other.

Your dog is like a chew toy to your cat. Get a bigger dog or a smaller cat.
