you need to crate your puppy when you can't watch him like a hawk and be more responsible about picking up. garbage cans with lids should help. by the way, cigarette butts are LETHAL to dogs if too many are ingested. had a client with a cocker spaniel who did this and one too many times...then ginger died. saw it first hand...held her myself in the office when she passed. be a responsible pet parent. anything other than food can harm your puppy and some human foods can do the same.

Keep them out of his reach. Puppies are prone to eat just about anything depending on the breed. Cig butts aren't good because, just like you, animals can become addicted to nicotine.

I'd recommend keeping your trash can under your sink and put some child locks on it. If you have an ash tray, move it out of the dog's reach and only take it down when you smoke (or if you smoke outside, put out the butt and throw it away inside). Tissues, same deal.

Good luck!

Like the first person said....he's a puppy, and that's what puppies do. Might as well start teaching the "leave it" and "drop it" commands now. When he has something in his mouth, firmly say, "Drop it!". He won't right away, of course, so you'll have to physically extract the item from his mouth....make sure to repeat "drop it!" a few more times until it's out of his mouth. When it is, praise him with words, petting, and maybe a treat.

If you see him sniffing at something, firmly say "leave it!" and gently push his head away. Repeat this until he stops sniffing at the item, then praise in the same manner.

Both of these commands can be taught with a harmless item (perhaps a ball that's not one of his usual playthings and never becomes one of his usual playthings). In the meantime, keep a close eye on him, and try to keep tempting, but harmful items out of his reach.

Good luck!

Puppies will be puppies.

Just give him something else to do. Besides what are cigarette butts and tissue paper where the puppy can get it in the first place?

Don't leave paper towels and tissues laying on the floor where the dog can get to them. Keep paper towels on the counter or in a cabinet. Keep tissues on a table top of above the toilet. Problem solved.

Puppies will eat ANYTHING. Just like a toddler, keep the puppy away from those areas and discipline them if they get into something.

Puppies are a lot like toddlers... if they can find it, they will try to eat it. I think it is because they see us put theses things up to our face and so they copy what they think WE are doing. Babies (and puppies) learn by rote. You know the old saying... "monkey see, monkey do".

because hes a puppy - and thats what they do. You need to watch him more closely... and give him toys to chew on. Try a kong with peanut butter inside it.

One way to stop him is to keep the items away from him. Dogs will eat until the explode unlike cats that will eat until full and then stop.

dogs will eat some pretty weird stuff it might be because he's hungry because he isn't fed enough or it just might be his nature. if it's the first give him a little more food if it's the second keep a little squirt gun handy
