I just received a bill from the DMV for next years license tags. Of course, it comes with the requirement of proof of insurance, smog inspection etc...none of which I can provide because I don't have the car!! I also don't have the new owner's name and address (who lives 400 miles from me) and the DMV says I'm still the owner and owe for the tags even though I sent them the paperwork to take this car out of my name and they lost it. Have you been there? What did you do?

THERE IS A FORM YOU CAN PRINT FROM THE DMV WEBSITE FOR TRANSFER OF OWNERSHIP, YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO FILL IT OUT AND TURN IT IN WITHIN 3 OR 5 DAYS I BELIEVE, THAT FORM WILL RELEASE YOU FROM ANY RESPONSIBILITY TOWARDS THE VEHICLE. FIND THE FORM FILL IT AND SEND IT ASAP!!!

In 1975 I sold a 57 Chevy to a kid that wrecked it before the paperwork was through. The state police tried to make me responsible.

You should have made a copy of the paperwork. If you didn't and they lost it, I doubt there is much recourse.
