I had that problem with an Olds Ciera. I found 2 things that helped and both relate to the device that kind of keeps the fumes blocked in the car. The rubber round thing at the end of the nozzle holds the fumes close to the car. Somehow this triggered the gas pump into thinking my tank was full at all times. So hang the nozzle a little out of the tank to get more air between the rubber thing and your car. And turn the rubber cone the other way. Instead of cupping towards the car, turn the cup part so it turns away from the car.

I have this problem if I go to a shitty gas station and my car has been runnning for awhile. I.E. on a roadtrip filling up at a podonk gas station. The best solution I found is, just barely stick the nozzle in, just enough that the gas doesn't splash out at you. Then hold the nozzle at something like a 45-60 degree angle and it usually cuts off about half as much. Or you could just go in and buy a slurpee before you fill up.

If it's a fairly new car, where I live Falcon is old, if the gasoline tank is a double belly like the Mustang, you have to replace the fuel tank. Ford has a bullentin out on it for Mustang.

I don't know about Falcons (we don't have them here), but I do vaguely remember Ford having this issue with the Ford Contour/Mercury Mystique/'99-'02 Mercury Cougar. The fix, was to replace the fuel filler neck flapper valve because they had a problem with them being stuck closed.

Dude, there's 2 hoses that go from the fuel-up port to the actual fuel tank; A large tube that the gasoline flows through into the tank, and a smaller hose, that is a 'breather' hose. I bet your smaller 'breather' hose is clogged somehow, causing your gas to back-up into the fillup hose. check it out.
