The devil's advocate is trying to show you the other side of the coin while the pompous windbag is trying to tell you his/her way is the only way.

I can't imagine what would be different. If the christian religion is true, then both the devil's advocate and pompous windbags that think they can pursuade people to believe christianity will both convince people to stay away from the christian religion

The devil's advocate is someone who looks for flaws in a person's character when that person is being considered for sainthood. It's a nasty job but it helps too many people with a questionable reputation from being granted the title of sainthood.

A windbag is nasty simply for his own ego.

a devil's advocate is one who wants to be recognized as being intelligent and wise but lacks the confidence to be assertive. A windbag blows because he likes the sound of wind.

a pompous windbag is someone that argues because they want to be right, a devil's advocate wants you to see something from another perspective.

a wind bag just likes to argue to hear themselves talk. someone playing devils advocate tries to encourage debate not because they want to listen to themselves but because they want to agitate the other person into explaining themselves completley and defend their position.
