I'm wanting to be an officer in the Marines, I have super long hair. Like two inches past my elbows, do I have to cut it when I go to BT? And if not whats the easiest way to put it up?

Assuming that you are female, as long as you can keep it up off of you collar you should be fine. Just make sure that you have your hair neat and don't just throw it up under your hat. Most females I talk to say the easiest way to keep it within regs is to put it up in a bun, its quick and easy. You might want to consider a trim before you go, because the shorter it is the easier it is to manage. All the guys will get shaved the day they arrive, and all the girls will be briefed on how to keep their hair.

so it was nice that everyone automatically assumed that you were a male!!!! and if that were the case you would indeed need to have a high and tight hair cut, but, Megan, since you are a female, your hair will have to be able to be pulled up in a bun so that is not below your collar of your shirt, and it can not interfere with the wear of your combat helmet, honestly i know a number of females in the marines/army with hair as long or longer than you are describing, and when you get to basic you will get the full regulations!

i am sorry that everyone else jumped to the conclusion that you were a male!

but again putting your hair up in a bun is the most common method for someone with as much hair as you have.

No...you do not have to cut your long hair off to be in the Marines...
They will do it for you in 2 seconds with snickers and glee!

Seriously, if you want a good start in the military, particularly in the Marines... you best show up with short hair before you get on the bus. That goes for the ladies also.

When I was in the Air Force, we were always getting jacked up (as a squad) for the idiot girl that had one hair out of place or a hair on her bed or brush.

If you can't give up your hair for a military career, then you shouldn't join in the first place... and you should re-evaluate your priorities.

Your hair has to be able to be in a neat bun off your colar. If you need to cut it... my wife is a stylist and she recommends giving your hair to Locks of Love. That way you won't feel too bad about having to cut it off! The hair has to be at least 10 inches, but it sounds like you have enough!!!

Don't join the military if you are going to go in using your own ideas, Besides there are too many ppl waiting for a shave and there is no time for beauty parlor stuff. And do you have any idea what they do with the hair shaved?

For the marines you will have it shaved at basic training.

If you plan on being a officer, you will want to look at ROTC at a college program

Whats the style of cut for the military? (buzz cut? Trim? I dunno..)

And yes they will make you shave your head probably... Because it will get in the way of your training..

That is the first thing they are going to do to you....snip, snip, snip. Those barbers love it when people like you come in. Did you think they were actually going to let you wear a hair net or something?

Good Luck in Basic!

if you are a male, yes you will have to cut it. if you are a female you can put it up in a bun. i found that it was easier if i put my hair in a pony tail, braided it, and then put it in a bun, it held up much better and didnt look sloppy.
