OK........I want to know what will work...I ahve travelled all over the world, grew up in a poor neighborhood in New York City in the 70's, served during a couple of armed conflicts, lived with whites-blacks-communist chinese-hispanics-muslims in Saudi Arabia-Germans-etc....I hate to say it but a lot of people do not care about these things....How can we fix these issues if the majority of the people do not care? It's really simple in theory.

Cease purchasing things whose manufacture and use creates pollutants.

Create a reign of terror so that governments have control over individuals' procreation.

Share.

This will work, but there are three problems:

The first case presumes that people will stop seeking to be filled by that which cannot fill them...and that is a ridiculous presumption. A related presumption is that people will stop seeking their own ease and comfort, and indulging their own sloth and greed. Another ridiculous presumption.

The second case is patently immoral.

The third case would take love, which is profoundly lacking on the earth.

--

Humankind will continue to act out of greed, sloth, pridefulness, and these sorts of things. No stopping it.

The only hope---the only real hope--is submission of one's own life to God.

That is, if you want to solve the world's problems, solve them in your own life first. Then come back and tell everybody what they need to do to solve it too. Then have fun watching many of them not do it.

But don't forget the first step: Seek to repair your own severed link with the creator of all that is good, submit to his will, and cleanse your own life via his infinite mercy, justice, and goodness.

I think we have made great strides in the past 40+ years changing the way we consume and pollute. Many people still drive SUV's, but there are plenty of compact cars out there. The problem is not that we are destroying the planet, which I would argue that we are not, but that we allow such crooked people to run our governments. They are so beyond corrupt, they honestlythink that what they are doing is good work. Some like the gentlemen running for governor in Massachusetts probably believes he was just doing his job as a lawyer when he tried to get a convicted rapist out of jail.

Once we start getting the people out of politics that are just in it for power, then the people in the world will have more commodites for themselves, people will have more options and they will pay more attention to the Earth. I have faith that people are inherently good, it is just that there are always a few bad apples.

Irregardless, God never gifted me anything, and if he does exist, he better be ready because I am going to apply for his job when I die. For far too long he's been sitting around doing nothing, just watching us suffer the injustices of the world.

In my admittedly not-so-humble opinion, it's not a matter of saving the planet from ourselves; it's a matter of saving US from ourselves. Planet earth is just fine and dandy; we're likely no more bothersome to it than a momentary, bloodsucking gnat. I mean, really: in the course of the earth's history there have been enormous cataclysms, major extinctions, meteor impacts, widespread volcanism, ice ages, etc. etc. Maybe 90% of all species get wiped out; earth always springs back in top form.

People whine a lot about how we're wreaking havoc on the planet, oh, we're destroying it, oh, we're killing Mother Nature, etc. etc. Please. We're all far too self-important; Mother Nature's probably hardly noticed we're here. Earth has been around for 4.6 billion years or so--that's four thousand, six hundred MILLION years, folks--human activities have been significantly impacting the earth for, what, 200 years or so? That's the blink of an eye, a drop in the bucket at best. Earth has suffered much more than us, and will in the future, I'm sure, and when humanity is gone (which I doubt will take very long), it will come back good as ever. We're causing species to go extinct at alarming rates? Come ON, it's not as if no new critters are going to evolve after we're gone. Our thinking is too temporally cramped; we can't see outside our own miserable little timeframes of decades and centuries and millennia.

So, how do we save us from ourselves, then? My pessimism continues: we don't. Humans are too inherently selfish and childish to live sustainably on the earth; we always skate as close to the edge of oblivion as we can; if environmental problems get bad, we clean up our act a bit, but only as much as we have to to prevent our own extinction. But one day a threshold is going to be crossed; we'll realize our mistake too late and there will be no going back, environmentally. And then it's bye-bye civilization, and possibly the human species too.

Sorry to be so pessimistic. Or rather, as I like to think of it, realistic.

We can't

If Relgiion is TRUE

And this is a difference between US and the Atheists

IF religion is TRUE, then everything is fix, the end is coming and there is NOTHING AT ALL we can do about it.

Atheists, however, can, theoretically, reverse the process IF they apply themselves and actually DO IT.

The sad fact is that both Theists and Atheists love their CARS and CARS make GREENHOUSE GASSES

ATHEISTS

I put a CHALLENGE TO YOU

PROVE US WRONG

PROVE REVELATIONS, and thus the BIBLE is a FRAUD

By CLEANING UP THE EARTH, BRING WORLD PEACE

Atheists, SHOW US WHAT YOU ARE MADE OF!

SHOW US, how WRONG we are!

Please!!!

Someone's gotta do it!

Otherwise the Bible is right and END OF TIMES will come!
Live with that, Atheists!

PROVE US WRONG

SHOW US everything is NOT fixed and can be changed

PLEASE...

Pretty please with sugar on it!

THIS is the ULTIMATE TEST OF WHO IS RIGHT, Theists or Atheist!

Can the ATHEISTS change the world

CAN they PROVE the BIBLE WRONG!

Go for it. You have MY blessings.

PROVE US WRONG!

Show us Armegoddon, or END OF TIMES will NOT HAPPEN

PLEASE!

Alcohol, drugs and free sex are ruining this planet. When people adopt a self-destructive lifestyle, how could they possibly give a flying ffck about the planet?! Whereas if one adopted a life of naturalness, for example eating healthy(eating food reaped from the earth), exercising (walking), practicing meditation, one will have a deep respect for the earth and no desire to harm it with chemicals. But in the end the rich wanna get richer and won't stop at anything to get it...even if it means jeopardizing the planet's health.

Well, I never used to like hearing this answer, but I've begun to see how true it is...

Always start with yourself first. The earth is a precious gift indeed. We can best teach others by setting a good example. So, if you can, bike to work, recycle 'til you drop, re-use your printer paper by running the blank side of the sheets as new paper, by earth-friendly laundry and dish detergent...

the list is endless, we know. The point is, that by changing your personal habits (including what products you choose to purchase - the most fuel-efficient car, recycled paper, etc), you're doing far more than you realize. By focusing anger/frustration on the problem, you're actually feeding it energy. By focusing your action on changing your own habits, you're generating positive energy.

Trust me, it works.

Since you've put this in the R&S category, I'm assuming you're looking for an R&S answer.

Selfishness is both at the core of most sins committed and at the core of most hostile acts toward the environment. Curb selfishness by exercising unselfish love for the Creator and His creation. This will change things.

Society as a whole and not a few people or governments need to decide that Earth is more important than money. until than, good luck to us all.

It won;t happen until the flood waters from the melting icebergs threaten major cities that we will see any real change.
