You didn't ask peoples opinions of you or what they thought about you if you did this, or even if you did this, so I don't why people are calling you names just for asking a legitimate question. Anyways, the majority of the answers are right. If you sign your rights away, then you are not bound in ANY way shape or form to that child. So even in a few years if you wanted to be in the childs life, you wouldn't be able to unless the mother decides to let you..and you would never be the father legally again. However, in most states, you CANNOT sign away your rights unless the baby is to be adopted by another man and the mother HAS to be married to this person.

If you sign away your rights, it means exactly what it says, you no longer have any ties to the child, legally or financially. If you think you want to sign your rights away, make sure you are positive, because you can't take it back!
If you are a "man" and just want to do this so you don't have to pay child support think again. You will have to be proved to be the father and you will still be made to pay support. If you have a child and your ex wants you to sign your rights away, just remember, you will not be allowed to see the child. You will not have a foot to stand on if you realize later that you want to see the child.

Back child support acts like a court judgment that can be collected by the mother in any way the state can get it--including garnishing wages, offsetting tax refunds or this years' stimulus payment. After yielding his rights to the child he may still have to support it depending on how the order is written. For that he will need his own attorney. That will be the best money he ever spends!

Well, the only reason you should do this if you are a jerk! I know I just got done doing this because I had a little girl 3 years ago and her dad has only seen her 3 times the whole time since she was born, I have tried to get him to be a part of her life time after time and he just runs, I am married now and I needed someone to be concidered the father for her and my husband wants to adpot her so in order for him to do that I had to have her real father sign over rights, for one her real father refused to sign the birth certificate and I didn't want her to grow up and ask why she didn't have a daddy.....Please if you are thinking about doing this don't unless you really don't want to be a daddy....it is a rewarding thing not a punishment..but it means you will not have any contact with this child until she is 18 years of age or she tells her mom she wants to meet you and then it is up to you and her.

Honestly, I don't know, but I would think if you sign away your rights, then it means you have NO rights. Is there a legal catagory on here? You might want to ask there.

If you sing away rights then you have no obligations. The only thing that will happen is the guilt you feel when your child grows up and at 18 is knocking on your door asking why you didnt want him or her.

I WANT TO KNOW IF YOU WERE ONLY SIXTEEN AND YOU WERE A WARD OF THE STATE YOURSELF BECAUSE YOUR MOTHER GAVE YOU UP FOR ADOPTION. AND THE CHILD YOU HAVE AT SIXTEEN IS PUT IN YOUR HEAD THAT YOU CAN T DO THIS YOU CAN T TAKE CARE OF A BABY AND THEY TELL YOU THAT YOUR DOING THE BEST THING IS TO SIGN THEM OVER AND YOU DO IT. WHO SHOULD I TALK TO. TO POTENTIALLY GET TO SEE OR HEAR OR AT LEAST ALLOW YOUR OTHER KIDS TO ESTABLISH SOME TYPE OF VISITATION, AND HAVE RIGHTS. ESPECIALLY IF THE CHILD THAT WAS GIVING UP FOR ADOPTION HAS REACHED OUT TO YOU SEVERAL TIMES VIA SOCIAL NETWORKS AND SHE REALLY LOVES YOU AND WANTS TO BE WITH YOU AND HER SIBLINGS BUT THE ADOPTIVE MOTHER IS CLEARLY AGAINST IT AND THREATENS YOUR BABY AS IN YOUR MOM IS GOING TO JAIL IF YOU GUYS TALK AND YOUR NOT ALOUD. BUT IN THE BEGINNING SHE WAS ALL WITH ME VISITING AND BEING THERE BUT AS THE YEARS WENT SHE AND MY BABY WENT EVEN WHEN WE WOULD EXCHANGE NUMBERS SHE MADE IT SEEM LIKE WERE GOING TO BE ABLE TO HAVE AT LEAST A FRIENDSHIP, BUT THINGS CHANGED. I NEED ANSWERS. AT SIXTEEN HOW DO YOU DO IT ALL ON YOUR OWN.
