The secular shift of the rest of the world, and the gradual move toward the scientific method for solving problems logically.

Personally, I HOPE there is a God. I know a lot of Atheists. If what they believe is true then what is the point of anything we do?

I don't want to believe that when we die, it's just over. That I will never see my family again. That justice will never be served. That the people who made life painful for others will not ever have to pay for their actions. That the people who spent their lives helping others and sacrificing all that they had for the good of others won't be rewarded somehow.

It's too depressing to be an Atheist. I would rather hope for something.

Even if it means that I have to take responsibility for my actions. That I can't do selfish and dishonest things and get away with it as long as nobody finds out.

The rise of religious intolerance, especially after 9-11. We were pretty comfortable thinking we were invulnerable until we were attacked, then we realized we weren't invincible and as powerful a nation as we thought. People got scared. People got afraid of other religions after Osama's religious war against the U.S.

Fear leading to anger leading to hate, to paraphrase Yoda, if I may. People got afraid, then ticked off, then right into hate and intolerance of anything or anyone different. Lots of people got sick of Bush and his cronies sending young people to die in a war over oil and religion. People got sick of their politicians telling them what the "right" way to be American was.

People are also more educated these days than they were in previous generations. More people going to college and graduating. Science and technology have come a long way as well. People are learning to explain things that were once unexplainable except through religion.

People are just plain sick and tired of hearing our politicians speak about religion instead of sticking to the job they were elected to do, which was to uphold the Constitution and make laws to protect all citizens, not just a priviledged few.

Fundamentalists in Christianity (and Islam and Judaism, to a much lesser extent) marginalizing people who don't agree with them in every way, and basically saying it's their way or the highway.

More scientific proof of evolution.

More bad news in the world that we know about--"If there's a loving God, why would there be...?"

More violence and hatred done in the name of religion.

And finally, thankfully, because it's allowed in America.

I think it is the lack of hope. This includes there being a greater margin between the wealthy and the poor, the constant barrage of terrible images on television, the criminalization of some of the different religious leaders. It all comes down to basic hope and faith in confidence that God actually exists. After all of these things, and more, they simply loose hope, or faith, whatever you choose to call it.

The Pope, many of the doctrines of the Roman Catholic Church, as they apply to human rights, birth control, women's rights, TRUTH, etc.
The fundamentalist churches in general chase people away from Christianity in hoards, but also bring many into their entertainment style of church service. I think more are frightened of them, than drawn to them, however.
God can't be proven by science, and we need proof, as a people in America; acting on faith isn't easy for even semi-educated minds to grasp.

now that everyone in America has access to Cash and not a select few, and the government is not forcing religion on people as a menas of control, it is rather interesting to watch religion die.

It is a joke

People love sin to much. People do not want to know the truth. If they don't believe in God they can sin all they wish. They are blind.
