More interesting a question than most of you know.
The first Grand lodge was created in the early 1700's but there are carvings of our degree work on Roselin chapel that date back to the 1300's next to Templar Knight symbols hmm but I digress.
As a Mason I do not believe Jesus was a Freemason but there are some that do believe there was a similar institution back then and Jesus was one. Remember Masonry Guilds believed to be the beginnings of the fraternity date back to ancient Egypt. But contrary to ignorant individuals we are not Luciferian just the opposite I am a Templar and I would have to believe Jesus would be impressed by the Philanthropy and lessons taught by Freemasons!

Interesting perspective- it is indeed an interesting concept, however I think since Jesus was a carpenter, he would have been a part of a woodworking rather than a stone mason guild. Most, if not all, Freemasonry is based on the Old Testament; with particular emphasis on King Solomon. Still an interesting question, have a star. ADD: I like FM693's answer too.

Not a bad question, actually. It is said that Joseph was a "tekton" which is taken to mean "builder." Certainly was more stone than wood to work with in the Holy Land.

As far as was Joshua ben Joseph a member of the UGLE sanctioned body, a card-carrying member of the Ancient and Accepted Order, NO. As was earlier posted, that got roped together in 1717 (although Lodges existed centuries before).

Now, was he an esoteric looking to change the world, to better the morals of his community, was he on the level with beggars and kings? I think the answer is YES.

Remember he was an Essene, though. He probably would not have mixed with Gentiles at all. Probably would disavow all of his present followers who call themselves "Christians."

It was Saul/Paul of Tarsus who decided (or had a vision, he claimed) to take the message out to the Gentiles.

Jacob (James), Joshua ben Joseph's brother, kept the message in Jerusalem until he was killed. Suspicion of guilt of that murder still remains on Paul and his followers.

So, hard to say if Jesus would have felt comfortable in the idea that Muslims, Jews, Taoists, Buddhists, Mormons, Lutherans, Zorastarians could all be rebuilding Solomon's Temple. One could only hope.

Just my two cents' worth.

No Jesus was not a freemason. The cult of the mason has nothing to do with the Lord Jesus Christ. Salvation is a free gift without any kind of works. The Lord Jesus Christ died on the cross for our sins and all we have to do is put our faith and trust in what He did for us. To be a freemason you have to do a lot which don't do anything for you but send you to hell. Ephesians 2: 8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Ephesians 2: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

freemasonry didn't even exist till after Jesus. If you look at the gospels Jesus tells never to swear by anything. They take many oaths and swear to keep them. If you look even deeper there is a whole lot more wrong with that organization. I have had my run ins with freemasons. Not positive experieces. For some that claim the represent Christ, they sure don't act like it.

No. Freemasonry didn't begin until 1717:
The first Grand Lodge formed in Freemasonry was The Grand Lodge of England (GLE), founded in 1717, when four existing London Lodges met. This rapidly expanded into a regulatory body, which almost all English Lodges joined. From the 1750s onwards, two competing English Grand Lodges vied for supremacy - the "Moderns" (GLE) and "Ancients" (or Athol) Grand Lodges. They finally united in 1813 to form the present United Grand Lodge of England (UGLE).
