From a Firefighter of 12 years its a no-no to take a fire truck off the highway or safe area to fight brush or field fires. There have been occasions when we get caught out by shifting winds or the fires intensity which does cause casualties and fatalities but no matter how well you are trained, nature will sometimes have the last say. No ones perfect but Firefighters are the best emergency personnel you can get!

Uh, how do you make them fireproof? They may be made of metal, but they need upholstery just like any other vehicle, and there are a myriad of supplies that have to be carried that can't be fireproofed completely, like fire hose, that have to be flexible. Since very few fire trucks burst into flames, I don't see it as an issue. Of more importance and much more useful would be an immobilzer that keeps the truck from moving while allowing the engine to keep running.

Actually, I read today that the firefighters who died recently weren't in the truck. (The initial reports were incorrect).

I imagine they couldn't outrun the fire because there were strong winds, dry wood, and fire travels extremely fast uphill, so they just got caught in a bad spot.

To fire proof a fire truck would make them too heavy. They are heavy enough already. 99% of the time they don't get INTO the fire but stay on the perimeter of it. Pops

yes they should be. the sad thing is those firefighters should not have died. but some mindless yobbos thought it would be fun to set fire to something. when they are caught, and they will be they should be charged with murder.
