Is it just me, or do men tend to turn the TV volume WAAAAAY up? Is there some poor woman in *your* house being deafened an inch at a time, with her hands over her ears, shouting to be heard over the ads, "Honey, can you PLEASE turn the TV down?" There sure is in MY house, and I'm she.

Any opinions on the hearing acuity of men vs. women?

This isn't a gender thing. Some men, some women.

Luckily, my wife and I seem to agree on similar volume for the TV when we watch and for the radio on the ride to work and back.

I have heard, though, that when she's in the car by herself and hears a favorite song come on, she cranks it up and sings along. I can't do that. It hurts my ears.

So, it's not just men and it's also not just women. It's some people, regardless of gender.

BTW: My wife can hear and make out conversation at a lower volume than I can. And she can almost always handle more facets in a conversation (multitasking) than I can. Now, as I understand it from articles I've read, that IS a gender thing.

Not sure why it is.. But there are a few factors that COULD apply here. Such as most men (not all) work in an environment where there is alot of noise, or they have at one time. This does cause a bit of hearing loss. It does not mean they are "deaf", but just some loss, which could in turn, make them need the tv, radio, etc turned up a bit more than some.

The volume on my TV always seems to sky rocket whenever commercials come on. Check it out .. watch any TV show .. then listen for the commercials .. that is when you notice that you want the volume turned down. Not much your husband or wife can do to control that. Good Luck ! :)

Every man I've ever known has to have the volume up on the TV starting with my dad.

My son makes me turn the volume down on everything (teenager - strange). I can hear my dad's tv three houses away, I think he has industrial deafness. Sometimes I think they make tv's now so you have to buy surround sound to hear properly.

Commercials are unusually loud for sure.

Also, ever notice in the movie theatres lately, they are blasting the volume - there are times I've wished I had ear plugs, it was almost painful!

What can we do about this problem? This is probly why they dont hear well. It irritates the heck out of me. What gets me, is its the same shows every night. Rerun after rerun, like they cant get enough, and its loud as H E L L .

I read in a magazine somewhere that women have better hearing than men, that's why they put the volume so high. While it sounds too high for us, to them it sounds perfectly normal.

Actually, I'm already deaf, and I always tell my husband, can you crank that a little...unless it's the smilin bob commercial, which I hate. The commercial's ok, but the music drives me NUTS!

My old housemate used to be the same, and she usually did it just when I wanted to go to bed. But she was just a loud person in general.
