okay so my dog is 3. is it okay to smack him on the butt when he is doing something that he KNOWS darn well that he is not supposed to be doing? i don't hit him hard--i love my dog. but is this considered animal abuse?
i have 7 pets, and i love them all to pieces and they seem to be happy. they are well fed, i play with them, cuddle them, and keep them clean.
so is what i'm doing considered wrong?

he's a chihuahua, so he has behavioral issues. and he also has a small sensitive nose. and i don't want him to SEE me smacking him. so that way he won't associate me with his butt getting whacked.

It's not a good thing to do because dogs don't respond to hitting as a corrective device. Most people hit dogs thinking that they are correcting them when in actuality all they're doing is just releasing their frustration and/or anger on the pet (I'm not accusing you of this however since I don't even know you). The best way to correct a dog is to catch it during his bad behavior and get in his face and yell NO! Also reward and praise the pet for good behavior. I suggest you consult a good dog trainer in your area for more advice.

It is definately not okay to physically discipline a dog. This only causes the dog to be afraid of you and possibly even cause the dog to try and defend itself against you. By physically discipining a dog, you do not send across the message that you want the dog to cease its misbehavior.
As soon as you catch the dog performing the undesirable behavior, you should make a loud noise such as clapping your hands or sternly and clearly say, "Uh-Uh" (as in "no" because "no" is too commonly used as an everyday word and thus is not particularly distinctive to a dog). After you've gotten the dog's attention, remove the distraction or remove the dog from the distraction if you can. Then, reward your dog with a treat and praises. By doing so, you reinforce the desirable behavior to your dog.
If you consistently apply this practice whenever you catch your dog misbehaving, your dog should get the hint and reduce this behavior.

I have 3 dogs, until last week I had four. I do not like to use my hand, especially not on their nose! Never hit an animal on the nose! I use a sound to let them know when they're doing something wrong. I hiss at the cats when they are up to something. For dogs, depending on their temperment, a firm "NO" or hit a newspaper on your leg or for a sensitive or timid dog, a hiss or click, will work, plus you can let them know even when you are more than an arm's length away.

A swat with your finger tips is just fine. I like the snapping of all fingers except the thumb too - taps but doesn't really hurt.
Now, swatting my 115 lb 2 year old who eaighs more than me on the butt.....OUCH!
IT IS NOT ANIMAL ABUSE!! What, are you supposed to give him a 'time out' in his crate to think over his sins?
Do wish all these misguided do-gooders who promulgate such nonsense would find all life
Jessica above is clueless - love to see her persuade a 110 lbs Husky that biting is not nice by clapping her hands!! Or convince a Rhodesian Ridgeback caught in mid-counter sweep to please remove his feet from the counter and drop the roast ...clap clap....much munch......- much more effective to catch his backside with your fingertips and shock the bejeesus out of him.
The first poster needs a shrink if he can't distinguish between an animal and a child and the differences in methods of communication ..there they go again anthropomorphizing
Swatting is exactly the kind of behavior in which dogs engage with each other. Do something to annoy the senior boss dog, find yourself slammed with a shoulder or bumped sideway. Gee....guess Jessica wants to have my 15 year old dog arrested for "abusing" the 2 year old (who is twice her size) when she smacks into him with her whole body and whacks him sideways to stop behavior finds objectionable.....

Ok - how would you like to be smacked on the butt for something you did wrong?? I have an 8 month old chihuahua and I never ever smack him. Talk to your dog, they understand.

ive always thought of that as the most humane place to smack a misbehaving tot, canine or human. The face is just bad. Have you tried positive reinforcement?

I don't think smacking a dog on the butt lightly isn't a crime. Now if you beat the dog, I would say heck yeah that's abuse. I have a Pug and sometimes she gets into things she knows she's not suppose to do, like chewing on my shoes that have heals. I just tap her on the butt and say, "No, that's a bad girl". She knows she has done something wrong when I do that.

Maybe using a different method will be better, obviously you don't feel good doing this ... if something does not feel good ... is not good then.
Try to use a newspaper roll, do not hit your dog with it, just sound it against the wall or the floor, dogs do not like that sound. Just procure to do it at the moment that he is misbehaving.
Good Luck
