i am a professional stylist so i use pro color and am not current on the store brands except garnier and loreal are really hard to get out if you the color turns too dark or if you just don't like it..

now applying i know...
1) apply to top 1/3 staying a 1/4 of an inch from scalp leave ten min then;
2) apply to middle 1/3 and to scalp... leave on ten more min. then;
3) apply to remaining 1/3...gently massage all over making sure to get full coverage.. leave remaining time per directions and rinse..

this will give you a much more natural looking coloring..the ends of the hair are always a little lighter do to the sun, enviro and such..nobody has solid black hair and if they do you can tell it came from a bottle...
hope this helps...

Hey, well since you have dark brown hair already and would like to go black, I suggest you try a clairol product, soft black because I've dyed my hair black and it was way more black then I really wanted it, but that was my fault cause I dyed it twice. So please make sure you pick a soft black, that way it looks natural, I don't remember which clairol product it was I think its Ultress or the Bold n Brilliant, or Natural Instincts, but Clairol products are great and real healthy. So good luck with that and God Bless =)

You might want to use a semi-permanent color. The results are the same but it washes out gradually and the chemicals aren't as harsh. To help keep dye off of your ears and neck put Vaseline there. It will help the dye come off of your skin. I agree with the other answers to go with the soft black. You can get the color out of a grocery store or you could go to a beauty supply store. They will have all of the brands and all of the colors. Plus alot of times the sales person is able to help you with any questions you may have about the color.

If you want your hair to be soft black use a natural level 2 color it is just a shade lighter than jet black so it should be about what you are looking for

it is best to go to a professional. it is so tempting when you see so many colors at the store you can ruin your hair easily. good luck
