Honestly, I've gotten cheaper fares from travel agents. I've never found the internet to be cheaper than what I've gotten from a travel agent.

I fly between 80-100 times a year (for work mostly) and every single time I get an airline ticket, I find the cheapest flight directly on the airline's website. Like if I'm flying American Airlines, which I do a lot, I go to www.aa.com. I usually check with Expedia.com or Travelocity.com and see which airline has the cheapest flights, then I go to that airline's website and pick the same flights and they're the same price. Actually, they're cheaper because almost all of those websites charge a $5 (or more) "booking fee". Also, most airlines - including American - guarantee you will find the cheapest prices for their flights directly on their website. One more thing: Just about all of the "low-fare" airlines, like Southwest or JetBlue, ONLY advertise their flights on their own websites, so you can't book one of their flights on Expedia.com or any other websitte. So check their sites also, although they're also not always the cheapest either - almost every time I fly, I get the best deal on American or USAirways or one of the other major airlines.

Also one MORE thing: If you're willing to fly into other airports, like Oakland instead of San Francisco, look into those as well. The more flexible you are, the more likely you are to find a cheaper deal.

So basically, shop around but most likely it's best to book from the airline directly.
