depends on what you are protecting. The Doberman is the only breed in history to be created specifically for guarding and sentry duty. However, the Rottweiler and Boxers can be trained in personal protection. German Shepherds are well rounded dogs with prospects in protection and family. Malinois are good all around dogs too but are very hyper. Pitbulls/presa canario/ and many Mastiffs can be trained in protection work but the risk for these breeds actually deters many trainers. Honestly, it depends on what kind of handler YOU are and what YOU can do for the dog NOT the breed. There are many breeds out that can produce a great protection dog such as Labradors, Airdale Terriers, and even Schnauzers (giant/standard). It all depends on the dog NOT the breed. Also, when selecting a dog, be aware that 80 to 90 % of dogs will not stand up and fight an intruder or attacker. MOST will run away. Only about 10-20 % are born with the fighting drive. The rest, it has to be trained into them. Also, a title does not signify a dog as a good protection or work dog. There are many Schutzhund III dogs that would be terrible as personal protection or work/service dogs. Today, Schutzhund and KNPV are more of a show than a true certification. If you want a good personal/property protection dog, you have to look around for a breeder/trainer taht specializes in this. Be aware, a well trained and ready dog can cost from 3000-7000 without titles. If you want a titled dog that can and will perform protection constantly, try finding one with a MondioRing or RingSport title. Hard to find, and expensive but well worth the money for the actions.
Oh, and on a comment from above, a GOOD Schutzhund dog will NOT work for a Police/Service dog. The training is VERY different with concentration on many different aspects of teh bite and training.

First, I'd like to know why you want/need a protection dog. There are several breeds that I might suggest, but there are so many uneducated individuals out there who would ask such a question, get a dog, and then becuase of lack of knowledge end up with a dog that causes some serious damage, has to be put down, and adds to the list of reason's why certain breeds are "undesirable" and banned.
I would suggest looking for a local Schutzhund club. They will be able to properly educate you and guide you in the right direction. Schutzhund is typically a "sport" for people to compete in with their German Shepards, but Doberman Pinchers and other breeds also participate. Schutzhund trains a dog in three areas. 1) Tracking (using their nose to follow a scent trail). 2) Obedience (a must with any dog). and 3) Protection (tests the dog's courage, physical strength and agility - this test is easily misunderstood and is used to show that the dog is neither a coward nor a hazard). It is a very controlled three phase and three level sport. It teaches both dog and handler to be the best they can be.
If you are looking for a protection dog, do it for the right reasons and do it the right way. If you are looking for a dog that will just bark and alert when someone is on your property, most dogs will do just that. 9 times out of 10 a barking dog would scare away any would be intruder. Please make an educated decision.

I would say the presa canario. You have to have a lot of knowledge on how to handle ANY dog that you get or YOU could be injured. Personally, I would get a German Shepherd. They are fabulous dogs and very trainable (under the supervision of a trainer and you). I have had several GSD and they were all protective of me and mine. Without training, I might add.
Good luck.

A well rounded, even tempered dog who loves you and your family. Yeah for the Schutzhund people, I train regularly, and while it is a sport and fun for my dog, it does not make him a police dog. However I can personally testify that my Boxer has done his job at protecting me and my family! He is taught to bark and hold a subject on command and he will bite if allowed. I do not reccommed training any dog to do this, only a dog with a good happy tempermant. I own a Boxer. Talk to some clubs, and I would take a dog over a gun any day!

there are many options out there for protection dogs, but the most important thing isnt the breed, but the dog itself. for a good protection dog, you would want a breeder with a great reputation, a complete training, and constant working with the dog. anyone can tie up a 150 lb pitbull to a stake and toss it food, but the man who communicates with his GSD in tones and without a leash will be much better protected

Overall I would say the Doberman makes the best protection dog. They were specifically bred for guarding and protecting, unlike most other breeds that are used in those facets today. They are smart, agile, and very fast.

There are several choices.
1) German Shepherd
2) Doberman
3) Rottweiler
4)American Staffordshire Terrier (Pit Bull)
All 4 breeds are used as guard dogs and are very protective of their families.

honestly a dog who loves you will be your best protection.. also a dog who is extremely obedient. A typical "vicious" dog ISNT a good protection dog, becuase they will attack without correctly understanding when its appropriate thereby possibly causing you a lawsuit...
most dogs will defend their owners if they feel their owners are threatened

well, kind of odd, because i don't know any of them except for pit bull, really. but from my knowledge, i do know that pit bulls can be very protective, definetely. so i'd probably say pit bull. and it's also good to get one, becuase for some uncertain reason, they are bred constantly so much, so u will be taking one home, so that wud be nice. and it wud definetely protect a great deal
good luck!!! :-)
