Is this the same for everyone? How are they connected (yes, I know they're both on the end of my foot)?

And how many of you *didn't* just take your socks off?

The simple answer is; these digits are very important for maintaining your balance... they work in coordination. If you know anyone without toes or even one or two of them, ask them how much it has an effect on the balance. Even the loss of the 5th digit will have an effect.

A similar effect takes place with the 4th and 5th digit of the hand.. they are supplied by the same nerve.

no im not wearing socks but i did trry it i cant eiuther but i can raise only my big toe up and the rest down :)

lol, I don't have any socks on but, I tried it.
I reckon it's because the toes are to close together with muscle and stuff.

LOL, I did just move my toes to see, eventhough I already know the answer.
can you move your pinky (by its self without using ur other hand) and not move ur ring finger? i cant

If you spent as much time as they do stuffed into shoes that are probably too small for them you wouldn't want to anywhere alone neither.
