It's 1.
Each country has its own prefix that you have to dial just to place an international call to any country. (In the US its 001.) But once you dial that prefix, the US code is just 1, and you don't have to dial 1 again before the area code.

i think it differs depending the country you are calling from. the only reason i say that is because where i work at, i deal with alot of people who travel internationally and sometimes they try and call to other countries and many of times they try country codes that are wrong and i have to give them the right one, like if they came from traveling from one country (not theirs) and they have been using a certain country code to call home, then they come and try and use it from the US and it is a different one. Its happened often

1 and then the area code then the seven digit number.
