I have read about it on the internet. What an amazing occurance. If that blast happened in Europe thousands would have died because it stretched 700 miles. IS there any evidence that it was anything other than an asteroid explosion that occured in the air.

The Tunguska event.

There have been lots of theories about the incident.
It is a disturbing reminder of the dangers our planet faces from Earth-crosser asteroids. Shoemaker (of Shoemkaer-Levi the asteroid that impacted Jupiter a few years back) estimates that an impact of that size could happen about every 300 years.

And yes, it is lucky that it happened in an area as remote russia.

Wikipedia has a nice discussion on the event.
