In most households around the world, biscuits are amongst the first things one eats in the day. In fact, in India families sit together in the morning dipping biscuits into their cups of tea and contemplating on the day ahead. And come the monsoons, then it is a favorite mid afternoon time-pass sessions – biscuits dipped in tea with all the day’s gossip happening.

While, it maybe the coffee table essential, it is also a food object that is relished by children, no matter what their ages maybe. And the variety made available manages to completely confuse the child as to what they really like, and what they would prefer to avoid.

However, the universal favorite that goes well with almost every age is the cream biscuits, especially the chocolate cream ones with sugar sprinkled on top. Then there are the orange cream biscuits, as well as the jam biscuits. Apart from these yummy sweet treats, there are the salted biscuits too. These make perfect mid-meal snacks; especially when one experiences those sudden hunger pangs.

Biscuits are bland bready things. Here's a recipe... make some and find out.

2 C all purpose flour
2 t baking powder
¼ t soda
¾ t salt
¼ cup shortening
1 cup buttermilk

Mix well all dry ingredients. Cut in shortening until mixture resembles very coarse crumbs. Add buttermilk and mix well but lightly. Turn out onto lightly floured surface. Knead lightly just until smooth. Roll to about ½ inch thickness. Cut with cutter to desired shape. Place on lightly greased sheet and bake at 450° for 10-12 minutes. Makes about 12 biscuits.

In Turkey, I was staying with an American friend last week who made "biscuits", they were akin to scones. Maybe it's just his baking though!!
