I'm 18 now and I still live with my parents, it costs an arm and a leg to get your own place in Manhattan.
They would never kick me out but I definitely do not want to live here when I'm 21...I'll probably be in a dorm by them anyway.

I moved out when I was 17. Been tempted to move back in, but never did. The only reason someone over 21 should live with their parents is if they are a full time student or are actively saving for their own place.

I paid my own way through university with summer jobs and thankfully didn't have to pay rent, so I never neede "student loans" that virtually bankrupt a lot of other students after graduating or leaving school. Then when parents retired, I stayed to take care of and guard the house while they travelled Europe or stayed in Florida for the winters, and I could save money (for a house and make a bigger down payment, pay less interest) or buy things. Very convenient for everyone. Its common in other countries for more than one generation in a household. Parents become grandparents and can help as childcare or babysitting too, And young adults help when parents/grandparents get sick too. People helping people.

No, but that was back in the '50's and I was working and contributing to the house. I got married at 20 so I was out of the house before 21.

No, I am fortunate in that I have parents who I get along well with, enjoy a good relationship and like cohabiting together.
In saying this, I did leave home at 18 to head overseas on a 2 year working holiday and on returning to Australia, set up by myself. Now, at 31, I know that they would always take me back if ever I asked or needed a roof over my head

In the culture of our country, it is common to see married couples still living with their parents depending on them for sustenance. Our parents can't bear to see their children going through hardships and wait for them to make the first move in leaving.
Western culture though dictates that children become independent at the age of 18. If I were in your shoes and my parents pushed me out at that age, I would accept the challenge and look for a job to be able to support myself and meet the trials of life on my own. This is not to say that I would burn my bridges, I would still recognize and relate to them as parents although I would not force my presence on them if they don't want me around anymore.

I am a parent that did make my son leave...I gave him the ultimatum! I told him to stop treating his brother like crap and to stop smoking in my home. He was very physical with his brother and it cause alot of problems. The disrespect for me and my home was too much so I told him it was time to go. We have the best relationship now and he is really doing great. He has a good job with company benefit possibilities and is taking care of his home and himself and doesn't ask me for help in which I am MOM and would still help him. I would do the same for my other two too!
