I had a business relationship with someone that just passed away unexpectedly. We did not get along and he was the reason I left the partnership. He left a wife and 2 young children. I would like to donate to the memorial fund but am not sure what an appropriate amount to donate is, also considering I am on a tight budget.

I'd say $25 is plenty. Anyway, most charities send a card telling the family a donation was made in their loved ones honor but they don't specify the amount. Just the fact that you made a thoughtful contribution should be enough.
