why do schools place such an importance on english (we already know how to read and write)? why not a more useful subject like math?

maybe they could have english electives you can take if you plan on becoming a writer. all you need is a basic understanding of english to be able to read and write.

math is different. math, along with english, is used in daily life one way or another. the difference is that math keeps getting more advanced and if you don't understand algebra, you'll probably fail higher math. if you didn't understand 9th grade english that doesn't mean you'll automatically fail 10th grade english.

it separates the distinguished and discipline from the not-so-distinguished and disciplined... you have to have patience and discipline for both

It would surprise you how may Americans that cannot read or write English at all. If you can't read you sure won't know how to do a math problem

Reading well and comprehending what you read is basic, so that you can understand every other subject. Social Studies, Mathematics, History - everything is easier when you read well.
