First you should find out if there are any local restrictions, and or special guild lines on the purchase, and carrying of firearms. Shot guns, and rifles, except black powder, are federally regulated, but no special license is required to purchase one. I would recommend finding a way to try out a few different kinds of guns. A 12GA is the most common type but depending on personal preference and your build, a smaller 20GA is just as use full without beating your shoulder up as much. Many state and local agencies provide free hunter safety, firearm safety courses. Your town clerk can provide you with information about these courses because they are necessary to obtain a hunting license. Hunting without a license, or out of season, can lead to hefty fines, and jail time. All states require that the ammunition be stored seperately from the firearm during transportation. I.E. firearm in the trunk, ammunition locked in the glove box. Your local DEC officer, who can be contacted through your state police department, will be able to answer any and all other questions and concerns.

Yes, federal law states that you can buy a shotgun/rifle at 18, 21 for handguns. For instructyions on how to use it, you have to seek private sources. You can transport the shotgun home by taxi, or get a ride from someone. There is nothing wrong/illegal about this. .

I suggest finding a ride. Preferably with someone who knows about guns and can educate you in the buying process as well as safety.

Somewhere in your town/city, there is someone who can teach you how to use a weapon properly. Seek these folk out and they will be happy to show you how to use it correctly.

Best wishes!

Go to a gun range first and learn to shoot, or go to a gun shot that has a range.
