Two speaker wires got crossed and two small puffs of smoke came out accompanied with a poof! The receiver is an Onkyo HTR-500 and is a decent receiver but maybe not audiophile quality. Should I pay someone to have this repaired or trash it?. What could have blown? What would a rough estimate be , on repairs? Anything you can tell me will be helpful. Feel free to contact me outside of this forum at jjck2727@yahoo.com to discuss further. Thanks for the help........John

Sell it as-is for parts or just give it to a electronics repair shop and get a new one. Prices are at an all-time low right now, and there are so many deals on the internet too. It's a buyer's market.

If you saw smoke that most likely you popped a cap. Most electronics repair places do NOT give free estimates, they credit you the diagnostic if you have it repaired. You WILL spend more to have it fixed than it is worth. Buy a new yamaha if you cross the wires it will just go into protect and you will have to restart it and correct the problem. Also they are available for about $300. I imagine if you really wanted it repaired it would only be abot $170 but do you really want an old unit with no warranty for $170 or brand new for about 300. Cost-benefit.

It is an $800.00 receiver I would spend at least $75.00 to get an estimate for repairs, also does it have a warranty? Depending on what you want to spend you may want to consider a higher quality receiver such as a used McIntosh(priced $1000.00 plus but worth the money) I had a high end Yamaha but bought a McIntosh. The Mac made the Yamaha sound like a transistor radio. http://www.audioclassics.com/ has a great service department and knowledgeable people that may be able to help you, they also sell high end audio equipment with wide price ranges. I have used them in the past and always been VERY satisfied. good luck :o)

If the receiver cost more than $500, it may be worth getting repaired. Many receivers have fuses in their output circuits to protect against output overload. Check your manual, or look at the back of the receiver to see if there are any fuses blown. Many places have fixed-rate service fees, and you should certainly contact Onkyo for advice.

Its a pretty High End rcvr I would take it in and get an estimate. Its odd that it smoked. Most RCVR's have overload protection to protect against this kind of failure. My Technics has and I have crossed the wires.. But if you blew the amps., They are Chips and will be expencive. Have it looked at then choose.
