Fisrt off don't listen to the last 2 dudes. The Jetta is not a chick car nor does it scream out mothers car. That would be the Cabriolet. Look on some other sites like vwvortex.com and see what others are doing with their vehicles. Also check out some magazines like Eurotuner and PVW to see what the real "Euro" scenes are doin with their cars. Depending on the engine you have there are several possibilities in the tuning department. Not all VW engines are great but when done right they can kick soem serious butt. But in my opinion the "race look" is overplayed and outdone. I think VW's look better when the builder/owner goes in an OEM+ direction. When you start putting these crazy bodykits and vinyl graphics that do nothing whatsoever, it makes your car look like crap. Keep it simple and clean. Just do your research before you mod anything and you will be happy. And remember, its your car, only you can decide what really looks good to you and don't worry about what anyone else thinks.

You can get a VW to compete with the best of the rice burners. You might look at the newsgroup rec.autos.makers.vw.watercooled for tons of great tips from people who do all sorts of things w/ their VWs.
You don't way what motor you're starting with. The standard treatment for a TDI is to chip the motor, install a heavy duty clutch, and hang on 'cause it will go 150 mph. The gas motors can be chipped, and the turbos are out there as well as other performance parts.
Should you do it? Well, I'm an old guy, and I need to drive mine every day, so I don't change mine. I have to go through snow, and on roads with pot holes, and drive it 400 miles in a single day, and none of that would be easy with 22" wheels or hard struts or short springs.
Then again, if you get tired of rice boys dustin you...
KEEP ALL YOUR RACING ON THE TRACK!!! Drag strips and SCCA events are much cheaper than tickets, and certainly much safer.

Definatly wouldn't fix up the jetta, first off mainly girls drive them, second they have terrible electrical problems as well as motor problems. Wouldn't try and making it into a fast car if anything I would put a mild body kit on it and do audio/video work. Put some nice 18's, screens in the visors, headrests and a double din monitor in the front. Throw in some nice speakers, amp and woofer and put it in shows. Peace
