I realize people have to put some effort into standing upright and tall, but its always been a pain in my case. Also, a few other members of my family including my father, and two aunts (who share the long torso) tend to slouch... our upper backs and sholders are constantly sore. my best guess is that because there is more upper weight for the legs to support, it's harder to stand up straight.

no its just poor posture, work on it. put a post it note where you can see it constantly saying "sit straight" and when you see it do as it says. you will notice better posture and less pain

I used to think this was the case for my family too. My grandmother, mother, and me have slouched shoulders. I also had the sore back. Well after starting an exercize program and developing some muscle in my back I dont slouch at all anymore, my back is perfectly straight and it takes no effort at all. Start working out and your problem will be solved. It's worth it.
