Check around, there are some banks that will let you open an account. However, if and when you file bankruptcy you will have to also have the new bank name, account #, and balance listed as one of your assets. You may want to open just a savings account since you already have a checking account for bill paying. If you use a bank debit card, you will only be able to get out what you have in the account and not have to worry about over-draft charges, just don't write any checks. Hope this helps.

I am a bankruptcy attorney in California. It is not impossible to open a check account during bankruptcy. It may be difficult and you may need to shop around a bit, but it is not impossible nor is it illegal. I would try a credit union, they usually don't to credit checks just to open an account.

Banks are not obligated to open an account for someone. If you have bad credit, you are a risk to them losing money, and they are in the business to MAKE money.
