I want a tattoo although I can hardly bare to wax, and I've heard the pain is similar. The smooth and tattooed among us answer only.

Well, waxing takes like a second and the pain doesn't last more that a minute. With a tattoo, you're skin will be drawn/filled with a tattoo needle for a while. Also it depends where you get your tattoo. It'll hurt more if you have your tattoo placed when there isn't much muscle between your skin and your bone.

Also afterwards, your skin will scabbed from the tattoo so you'll have to put lotion on it so it doesn't dry it. Plus, it gets itchy cuz your dead skin cells are flaking off.

It depends where you want the tattoo and what you wax! I have 5 tattoos in completely different body parts and have found...
Your backside, bottom of the back and stomach are the worst places to get tattoos (the areas with fat on them which tend to have a lot of nerve endings) according to my tattooist who is covered from head to toe in tattoos - directly over bone, such as your spine is not as painful as the areas around it, eg the sides of the back, again because of the fat.
The top of the arm and thigh dont hurt much, more muscle than fat i believe. if you can wax you can get tattoos just keep in mind it takes longer to tattoo than wax but the pain is localised.
I think of it as like a quick *** burn, it feels hot and stings but as soon as the needle leaves the skin it stops. i would say it hurts no more than when you graze your knees really. just remember not to wax the area you tattoo until its healed!
If you do get a tattoo eat before you go and take a drink and a lolly pop with you, if it does hurt you can bite that then, take your mind off it plus it keeps your blood sugar stable so those that are prone to feeling sick or fainting shouldnt then!
Your adrenaline also kicks in when you have a tattoo so the pain will be numbed a bit after a few minutes, with waxing this doesnt happen as its is so quick.
If in doubt find a small tattoo you like and go from there.

I wax and i also have a tattoo. I definitely think that the pain associated with waxing is short term versus the pain associated with tattoos. I guess it may depend more on how large of a tattoo you plan on getting and it's location. If it is something rather small than it probably won't be too bad, but for something larger I'm not sure your pain threshold is high enough. The bottom line is how bad do you want the tattoo?

The pain is comparable but it's not as violent as waxing, it's the duration that's painful. In many places, it's just uncomfortable but It depends on the area you're thinking about getting done. Ribs was the worst I got. It was quite painful. Other places known to hurt a lot are elbows and feet; generally places that are close to the bone.

Everyone deals with pain differently, if you can hardly bare waxing then perhaps a tattoo is not the best option for you.
You could try things like henna and semi-permanent tattoos.

Also, please remember that alcohol and pain killers are not an option as they thin the blood and are best avoided when going in for a tattoo.

the pains are two different kind of pains... personally i cant stand to wax and when i try i only get through half a leg and give up BUT i have 3 tattoo's!?! the pain from getting a tattoo is like a scraping sensation that eventually although still hurts gets a bit numb. it also depends where you get them. BUT i have just had a converstation with my friend in my office who also has a tattoo who said the pain from tattoo is far worse than waxing!?! so in effect i guess that it depends on what kind of person you are and i havent answered your question at all i have just babbled but have got 2 points at the end so thanks anyway.

Sorry to tell you this , but a tattoo hurts more!
I do not find them similar pains...with a tattoo the pain is more consistant , and on a different level to waxing , a deeper , scratching pain...i hope i'm not putting you off!
I take a couple of paracetamol b4 hand as i'm a chicken - but i've still had 4 done , and the pain gets less each time - you become more tolerant to it...
Never regretted it - get it done , you won't look back...just don't get addicted!

I have never waxed any part of my body, but i would have to say getting your eyebrows waxed would hurt more than getting a little tattoo done.

I think waxing is worse, i have a grizzly bear tattoo and it took an hour to do, i never felt much pain , not as bad as the ony time i waxed, but then I have had 2 children, that puts pain into perspective!
