I'm sure she's making SOME effort; it's hard in this society. No ones perfect though :) Peace.

She can still be a Muslim, it's just that she is not following all of the Muslim standards. I've seen Muslim women with a head covering, but then tight jeans, or a low-cut shirt, and thought that was really odd. But I guess each person follows as much as they are comfortable with. Each are on their own level. I would not say she is a hypocrite just because of that.

Muslim girls are supposed to stay covered but many who come to western societies don't always want to or dont "like it". I know many Muslims who don't cover their heads but its at least important to stay modest by at least covering your legs and most of your arms. Many girls who stop thinking about covering themselves in modest ways are the ones who tend to forget or drift away from their religon. Mostly what I'm trying to say is the Muslim women who are confident enough to go out and wear a head scarf or dress in a way that isn't provacative are the ones that truley stand out to be closer to their faith. Your friend either dosen't come from a very religous background or she is being a type of hypocrite. I bet that if you ever question why she dresses in that way she would surely get nervous or will try to change the subject.

She is in a western society and is free to dress as she pleases.
There is not one Islamic State in the World today and no one is allowed to carry out any Muslim Shariah in any Muslim society if they are not capable of providing for everyone as in an Islamic State.
Dont let them fool you. They dont use the Quran and therefore have no authority to even lay claim to Islam.
Women are in more danger in Muslim countries than in the West.
The fact that your Muslim friend chooses to expose her beauty to the World is evidence of the lack of Muslim leadership and the loss of manhood among Muslim groups.

I've been told that when a girl reaches a certain age, she has the choice of wearing the hijab or not. Islam teaches that people should dress modestly, and there aren't many more specifications than that.

In Islam, as in Christianity, there are a wide variety of practices. It sounds to me as if she is culturally assimilated here, so her idea of modesty is about the same as yours. The Islamic law is to dress modestly. What "modest" means can vary from one culture to another, even from one individual to another.
I know one Muslim family in which the teen daughter and the parents have some disagreements about clothing. Come to think of it, I have known Western families like that too.
Actually, why don't you ask her about it?

As in all religions, there is variation in practice. Your friend chooses not to veil, but I note that you say she dresses modestly. That is her interpretation of the Qur'an. Why do you assume she must dress * more* modestly?

Even if she does not dress properly..she is still Muslim..but not following appropriate dress..I don't consider her a hypocrite..but she is suppose to cover up....there may be reasons unknown to you why she does this..she will have to answer to ALLAH for all she does..
