When one should use "a" and "the" is there a thum rule?

A and an are used for non specific things.

The is used for something more specific.

I need to get "a" cab; any old cab will do.

I need to find "the" cab that I took earlier refers to a specific cab.

Basically, "a" is an article that means "one of/a type of X" and "the" means a very specific thing X.
