First, the so-called "doctor" a few posts up isn't all that believable, seeing as she can't write in complete sentences.
It's possible your son has a yeast infection. They are more common in girls and women, but it's not unheard of for boys or men to get them. I don't know if it works the same, but has he been on any antibiotics (that can cause yeast infections in women, I'd assume it could in men, too).
This could be awkward, but make sure he cleans himself properly. My mother-in-law had homebirths, and none of her boys are circumsized. When our boys were born, we chose not to circumsize them, and she told us to MAKE SURE as they get older that they know exactly how to clean themselves so they don't get infections. It probably wouldn't hurt, though, to make sure he knows how to (and is) properly clean himself, circumsized or not.
Make sure he keeps himself clean and dry, since both yeast infections and fungal infections can get worse if not properly clean, and can improve if there's not moisture (that is, I think, why it's called "jock itch" -- sweat and dirty clothes/athletic cups encourage fungus to grow)
These are short-term ideas. If Lamisil works for a while, I'm leaning towards some kind of fungal infection, but I don't know what kind, nor how he got it. Naturally, you should take your son to his pediatrician about it to make sure. Like anything else on the body, if there's long-standing infection, it can cause permanent and/or painful damage.

Is he circumsized. If not it is probably just a yeast infection. Jock itch is a fungil infection and he would be unlikely to get it.
It could be psoriasis or exzima which can commonly occur in the genetal area.
Your doctor will probably give him a cream like canestin or monostat if it's a yeast infection or a cortozone cream if it's a skin infection. Don't put anything other than diaper cream or vaseline until the doctor tells you what it is.
The alternative is he has been playing with it too much and it is getting iritated.

You're assuming your son has a fungal problem. You need to get him to a doctor instead for a thorough evaluation.
I'll provide a link with more information about Lamisil so you can see that it is an anti-fungal.

Take that kid immediately to a pediatrician. I do not know what he has, but treating a rash on his butt is one thing, the penis is another. This is a great site for an external infection to enter the body (note how STD's are transmitted. Even if you put having sex later in life aside, you are dealing with a primary I/O function of the body.

take him to a dermatologist or even a pediatrician. there can be several factors causing this condition, one such factor could be as simple as the laundry detergent you use. it could also be a food or cosmetic allergy to soap, lotions or body oils. try rinsing your clothes twice or use a mild laundry soap for his underwear.
last but not least if he has not been circumcised he may have a recurring fungal type infection trapped under his foreskin. i think 8 years old is too young, for him to be treated with over the counter remedies without medical diagnosis first. have him checked out so that the condition can be identified, treated and cured. i hate to think of him suffering.
