The history of pickles stretches so far back into antiquity that no definite time has been established for their origin, but they are estimated to be over 4,000 years old.

Bread & Butter - Sweet, thinly-sliced pickles made from cucumbers, onions and chopped green or red peppers. They have a distinct, slightly tangy taste. Available in smooth- or waffle-cut chips or chunks.

The words "Bread & Butter" refer to the taste and not the preparation method. Fresh pack or quick process pickles are not fermented. Instead, the acid necessary to preserve this product is added in the form of a ‘pickling solution’ of vinegar and spices. Sugar may also be added. Popular pickles such as bread-and-butter, and fresh pack dill are examples of this type of pickle.

Typically, this kind of pickle is not used for a bread and butter sandwich (unless that's what your taste buds require). On a deli meat and cheese sandwich with onion would be more appropriate or on a burger sandwich. It would also add great flavor to a potato or macaroni salad instead of sweet relish. :) By itself, its delicious if you want a sweet-like taste (not like sweet gherkins).

The term bread and butter pickles actually comes from Sweden's smorgasbord -- which is a table of delicacies eaten as appetizers before dinner. Included are several kinds of breads and butter, as well as pickled vegetables, (including pickled cucumbers) pickled and smoked fish and meats. Smorgasbord means "bread and butter table." Here in the U.S., of course, smorgasbord means a buffet-style meal.

In England, sandwiches of various kinds have been served during high tea. One type of sandwich is sliced cucumbers in between buttered, trimmed bread which is cut diagonally into two pieces. Hence, the term bread and butter pickles - they can be substituted for the cucumbers

this is an old reference to the fact that many poor families only had these pickles left over from the summers toil. Thus, in the cold of the winter, they were the bread and butter of most meals.

Sorry I don't know, but I like the name. It helps me to remember exactly how they taste. They probably taste good with bread and butter too.. :-) They are a much better alternative than sweet pickles with potato and macaroni salad for me... Yummy..
