It depends on where it is from. New York Cheesecake is definitely a cake because it is thick and creamy and can stand on its own without a shell. But if you buy the quick mix at the store and pour it into a shell, then i would qualify that as a pie. By the way New York style is the better of the two.

If you put a gun to my head, I guess I'd say "pie;" a soft filling enclosed in a baked crust...
But a baked cheesecake is truly NOT a cake (flour, eggs, sugar, leaveneing, etc), and NOT a pie (filling enclosed in short-crust-pastry, as traditionally understood).
A baked cheesecake is a separate category, in my opinion.

Well, the kind you don't bake is in a pie crust, so it seems kind of like pie. The ones you bake in a springform pan are more like cake, but not exactly. It's just all good! (-:
