It depends on what you mean by best tricks.

I taught my dog to touch certain things if he wanted something (ie ring a bell to go outside, touch the faucet in the bathroom if you are thirsty, etc.) This gave him a tool of communication rather than just barking.

He also knows "show me something new". It takes an object and you must reward with food or a toy for this one and you only reward when the dog interacts with the object and does something it hadn't done before. Small boxes work great. the dog touches the box, you treat. The dog puts a paw in, you treat. The dog puts both front paws in, you treat. The dog touches the box, you don't treat. It is a mind stimulating game that makes the dog think and be creative to try and get you to give it a treat.

I have also taught him to jump on top of a therapy ball and to sit, stand or lay down and catch tennis balls as someone pitches them in to him. A friends dog will on que of "Auwwh", she pulls her paw over her eye and rests her paw on her nose. It's quite cute and everyone laughs when she does it. I have also seen another couple's dog that would sit and lift its paw over its unit any time they said "Beat It" ala Michael Jackson.

Well, the 1st ones should be sit, down, stay, and come.

After that, beg is cute if you don't mind feeding tidbits off the table, most people like shake, and fetch will help exercise the dog without wearing you out too much.

Teach your dog to bark when somebody is at your house, and to protect you when you are in trouble or are hurt, and teach them not to get aggresive twords other animals and people. Those arn't tricks that are fun like catch and roll over but they will help you when you are in trouble.

You can teach them some other tricks like catch, speak, sit ,fetch and jump.

roll over is fun...we have a really fat beagle (dont worry the vet said he is healthy nobody can figure out his issue after blood tests and everything...hes a good boy) and he looks like a sausage rolling across the floor its funny. he also shakes and holds your hand. my west highland white terrrier fetches and actually brings it back and sets it at your feet. I also taught daisy how to sit up on her hind legs, shes a good girl, and she also dances, in a circle when you ask her if she wants a treat. I saw ontime on animal planet where this guy taught his dog to open the fridge door and get him a beer.

i hope you've already accomplished basic obedience. what kind of dog? you don't want to disgrace a big handsome collie by making it beg do you? if you want useful and you have a good sized dog, teach it to get the mail. if its a little tyke, teach it to fetch your slippers. i had a golden / border x that loved to bring me stuff. if i dropped a pen he'd jump up to bring it to me. retrievers are naturals at fetching. i had a cocker poodle that i taught to ride horseback. she even had her own pony.
