There are great differences in taste and smell. Up here "dry vodka" is the bestseller and it doesn`t have a taste at all. Smells like pure alcohol. My favourites are russian vodkas for their smooth taste acquired by some leftover or added sugar. Maybe like 2% but makes all the difference. Also, they differ in aging and the manner and media of how they are filtered. So, it's all matter of taste. Some like ultra-pure and some see that vodka should actually have a taste of some sort. Go ahead, try to taste many and find Your favorite!

Bad vodkas are usually cheap and generic. Good vodkas will be more pricey. But just because a bottle of vodka is expensive, doesn't mean it will be good. You should measure it against something tried and true, such as Grey Goose, Skyy, or Stoli. (my personal fav is called Three Olives)

If all else fails, judge by the price. If you are an experienced vodka drinker, you can tell by the after taste, but if your looking to buy a bottle for an occasion and aren't sure which way to go, trust the prices.

Yes, by how smooth it is. The smoothest is Grey Goose.
