A good dog for a first time owner is one that is older and trained. Especially at age 70, he may not have the energy that a puppy requires. Check with local shelters and rescues. There are times when a perfect dog for an older person ends up at the shelter or rescue b/c the owner passes and no one else will take the animal. Call around and also be sure that your granddad WANTS a dog, too.

We have a Pomeranian and we love him as if he was a family member. He is small, doesn't bark and has a great personality. Easy to house train and requires very little maintenance. The only drawback is he has long hair and when he sheds in the Summer and in the fall the grooming needs a some special attention. But, that is pretty easy if you sit and watch television. Just watch TV and brush him. Me and my wife are 65 years old and this Pom is almost 8 years old and he has never bitten anyone or has had a problem with anyone that comes to visit. He stays mainly in the house unless he goes to the door and wants out.

Ask him what kind of dog he would like and involve him in picking out the dog. Again, check with a rescue group to see what they have once a breed of dog is agreed upon. I would think a dog that is housebroken, leash trained, crate trained and healthy would be great. He probably would not want a puppy due to all the work involved. Make him part of the process.
Good luck.

A dog or any pet is not something one gives as a present. That is something one chooses after consideration. Then, does your granddad want a dog? Is he fit enough to handle it? and bear in mind that dogs live 15 years and lots more in many cases. So?

Well depends upon the health of your Grandad. I would suggest a medium to small dog. An inside dog to keep him company like a Pomeranian or a Jack Russell Terrier.

First you need to be sure that he even wants a dog.
Dogs are wonderful companions, but not everyone is able to care for them or even wants one.
If he does want one and is able to care for it, I would suggest a small breed. All dogs need exercise, but small breeds are able to get all they need indoors because it is easy for them to run around.
Of course that doesn't mean that the dog should never be brought outside to play or go on walks. It would just be convenient if your grandfather was ill and couldn't bring the dog out for a few days except for bathroom breaks.

Don't ever buy an animal for anyone without discussing it with them first. Maybe your grandfather doesn't want a dog. They can be a problem if he likes to be on the go a lot. If he says he would like one, let him pick one out. I've seen a lot of animals being neglected because someone (who thought they were being thoughtful) bought another person a dog or cat because they thought it would be good for them.

any some sort of terrier. they are very spunky dogs, very smart and easy to maintain. I have a west highland white terrier who is a doll, a very smart dog, a great guard dog and such a lover. We also have a scottish terrier who is lol, how should i say, she has a lot of personality and she constantly makes us laugh. (ie, her name is dori, reason being, she acts like the fish on finding nemo, dori) They enjoy going out to play, but are great indoors too. Westies shed a bit, but scotties dont nearly as much, both require a bit of grooming but once groomed are gorgeous dogs. I suggest everybody have a terrier, they are not only dogs but they act like your children. You gotta love em.
