You can begin the weaning process at 4 weeks by offering the puppies a good quality puppy chow moistened with warm water twice a day. The mom will usually have them totally weaned by 6 weeks at which time the breeder needs to totally take over the feeding. They need fresh water available at all times.

A dog will usually start weaning her pups at 6 wks. old,and thats why it is very important to start a pup eating at 4 wks. old by soaking their dry kibbles in warm water til softened then add a small amount of a good brand of canned puppy food in with it.You may have to keep putting them up to it a few times, but they will finally lap it up,but remove Mom first,as she will eat it before pups do.

I let my mama dogs decide when to wean their babies. It usually happens between 6-8 weeks. You should start introducing wet puppy food to them at about 4 weeks, and let mama dog feed them a few times a day until she is ready to wean them..
