most definite mastiff, because they have a very calm disposition.
pittbulls are too determine, too hyper, and strong, and this is what makes them so dangers.

Having owned an Old English Mastiff, I would take a mastiff in a heartbeat. He was a gentle giant with a mouthful of drool. He dearly loved my daughter and would allow her to ride his shoulders, when she was 4. When she was in school he would take her favorite stuffed animal, jump up onto her bed and lay there with his head on it until she came home. Unfortunately, they live long enough to break your heart, I had to put him down when he was 6 due to cancer. I now own German Shorthairs and love all 3 very much. When they go I will probably get either a rottie, dobie or bullmastiff.

I would study and learn about each breed ,then meet the dogs from each breed and make your choice. Also make sure you wiegh your pros and cons on each breed to. For instance Mastiff type dogs are very large and drool ,they will also consome more food . Pit Bull dogs can be dog aggressive and have strong prey drive. Study each breed and see wich one will best fit into your life style.

Do the research on both breeds. Take in account their exercise, training, feeding, and vet care requirements.
Check to see if breed bans or restrictions occur in your area.
Both breeds require an assertive owner, positive training, and dedication.
I own pitbulls myself.

Definately the pittie. Mastiffs drool, and you'd have to live on large acreage to give a mastiff the kind of exercise it needs... heck my pittie runs me ragged. On a positive note, he's helping me lose weight...

It would depend on the dog. I would not make a decision based on a breed but rather how I interacted with each dog as an individual.
