I have had a neck injury before and I wasn't able to move it around without excruciating pain, but it was because I was in a car accident. Anyway, the best thing to do if it is that bad and as painful as it sounds, is go to the doctor. If you can't get to the Doctor, go to the ER. They can take X-Rays and an MRI. If you can't move it alot without pain, it could be muscle spasms, probably from the way you sleep. When muscles are in spasms, what doctors usually do is prescribe muscle relaxants to the patient. Also they usually suggest to apply warm moist heat to the area because that will help relax the muscles and stop the spasms. Also, they usually prescribe Physical Therapy for the patient to help get their normal range of motion back to where it was before the injury occured. They also prescribe some kind of anti-inflammatory too. Motrin is a good anti-inflammatory, but there are other ones that the Doctor can prescribe that are stronger that may help even more. This is from my own experience.
Well, I hope I have been a help to you. Take care of yourself and I hope you feel better soon.

Poor sleeping habits, poor work habits and tension can all contribute to this problem.

While tension is not often the primary cause of neck pain, it can certainly worsen pain and make you more prone to injury.

Failure to exercise opposing muscle groups can also result in neck and shoulder pain. The imbalance of muscle strength can cause chronic or sporadic tension and tightness in these areas.

Some other specific conditions that can lead to muscle deterioration and pain include a sedentary lifestyle and general lack of muscular tone.

A healthy, pain-free neck also depends on the condition of your upper back. Because the neck and upper back share the same muscles, the strength and flexibility of the shoulders and upper back muscles are important for keeping the neck balanced.

Treatments-
Physical Medicine
a. neck pain may be relieved by manipulation, especially if the pain is due to a spinal "fixation" or "subluxation" which often requires adjustment for rapid relief. See a Chiropractor who's specialize in this field.

Hold your neck and apply a lot of pressure. I know it hurts but it'll help. Anyway, hold your neck and SLOWLY twist it to the right until it goes the whole way. Then hold onto your neck and again, twist it to the left.

If you have a stitch in your neck like I'm thinking, this will help. After you do that, you'll be able to move your neck in those directions. Continue doing that or it will stiffen back up.

The cause of you having the stitch is you slept in the wrong postition for a long time, a it stayed that way. It REALLY hurts when you wake up. I know, I've had it before. Good luck!

best answer please?

You have a pretty highly inflamed area in the neck involving the nerves. This in turn causes the muscles to go almost rigid to prevent you from moving to irritate it even more. If you have never been to see a chiropractor, this is one instance where it would be highly advised. Should walk out of the office with just a bit of sore muscles.. that is from the level of contraction they have been in, since this showed up. At your age there is rapid recovery.

You have a condition that is called "wrenched neck" in doctor slang. I know bacause I have had it myself. It is basicly a severe, deep muscle spasm in the neck. I had to go to the E.R Doctor(which is easy because it is the next department over from me) and he gave me a shot of toradol to numb pretty much my whole body and I moved my neck around and it was gone the next day(the pain, not my neck) and then he gave me mild muscle relaxers. That is how I went about it. Another piece of advice, After you shower, keep heat on it or it will hurt like hell later

Try putting a scarf around your neck before you go to bed. Also put some vicks on your neck before you put the scarf on. That usually works for me.
